Ghana is a country found along the Gulf of Guinea in the sub region of West Africa in the African continent. It is bordered to the west by Ivory Coast; to the north by Burkina Faso; to the east by Togo and to the south by the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean. Ghana was the first African country to gain independence from colonization by the United Kingdom on the 6th March 1957 under the leadership of Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah who was the first Prime Minister as well as the First President of Ghana. In terms of population policies and programmes which is the subject matter of this paper Ghana was the third country in Sub Saharan Africa after Mauritius(1958) and Kenya(1967) to adopt an explicit and comprehensive policy on population in the year 1969.This paper discusses the population policies and programmes of Ghana vis a vis its demographic profile over time. Even in the colonial times Ghana was seen as a country with prospects. From about 1945 to 1957 which is after the Second World War Gold Coast was a model colony of the British empire given that it was endowed with a relatively advanced network of infrastructure and social service institutions in health and education. These were facilities that had been financed with the proceeds of a previous cocoa boom in the 1920’s.
